Festivals in Frigiliana and Nerja

  • Three Kings Day- 5th and 6th of January - A parade of the Three Kings through the streets, sweets thrown and presents for children. This is like Christmas Day in Spain. It’s lots of fun.

  • San Sebastian - 20th of January - A local feast day in honour of the village’s Patron Saint.

  • Andalucia Day - 28th of February - Celebrations across Andalucia. Flamenco dancing from the ages of 3 to 83!

  • Dia de la Cruz - Day of Crosses - 3rd of May - Dances and Music.

  • Carnaval - Just before Lent, so dates vary each year. Fun and frolics, fancy dress. Beauty Kings and Queens, flamenco and dancing until the early hours.

  • Semana Santa - March or April, depending on when Easter falls. On Good Friday, the women of the village walk the old village by candlelight, singing the rosary from midnight. Dressed in black, it is a very moving ceremony. Indeed, the week of Semana Santa is beautiful.

  • San Antonio de Padua - A local festival around the 13th of June. Music, concerts, flamenco, tapas, lots of wine and a very community-focused atmosphere. Racing horses through the streets in the new town is one of the highlights. This is a great festival lasting for three days.

  • San Juan - Nerja - 23rd June. This is a must-do if you are here. Bonfires on the beach, live music and a dip in the sea at midnight whilst fireworks go off. I love this one!

  • Virgen del Carmen - Nerja- July - A procession of the Virgin carried into the sea. Lots of fun, sea dipping and music.

  • Festival of the Three Cultures - usually the last few days of August. This is a BIG festival, four days of fun! Fairs, stalls, a walking tapas trail, history and storytelling, belly dancing, giant puppets, live music. LOTS of food, drink and dancing.Celebrating the three cultures. In fact, as you walk about the town, you will notice that the three signs of these religions are spotted about. It’s all about respect for each other.

  • Rute de Art - Typically held during the first week of October. You can view over 30 artists from 12 nationalities, showcasing painting, sculpture, photography, digital illustration, ceramics and textiles. It’s a great opportunity to interact with the creators and even purchase original artwork.

  • All Saints Day - November 1st. A traditional day of remembrance.

  • Christmas is very special in Frigiliana. The decorations are wonderful and magical. Papa Noel visits on his motorbike, a helper in the sidecar and the lights are switched on, a snow machine covering children and adults alike. It's a great celebration, and of course, the church is beautifully decorated. It really is a magical time and all about tradition. And it doesn’t end until after Three Kings in January. Who can predict the weather? But we had a swim in Nerja on Christmas morning and Christmas dinner on the terrace.

  • As you can see, there is always something to celebrate in Frigiliana. It can also be very tranquil, honestly…..
